Modern Warfare 4 Camo Guide: Gold, Divergence and Mastery Camos

MW4’s camo grind is a long one, but most of the time you only need to worry about the next step in front of you.

Level a weapon, complete its Special challenges, finish Gold and move through the rest of the class. Once you reach Divergence, the grind shifts into the much bigger Multiplayer and DMZ Mastery challenges.

How the MW4 Camo Grind Works

The MW4 camo grind starts by levelling each weapon to unlock eight Military camos and three Special camo challenges. Finish those to unlock Gold, then work through Platinum, Harmonic Break and Divergence before starting the Multiplayer or DMZ Mastery grind.

Every weapon follows the same basic progression:

  1. Military camos: Eight camos that unlock automatically as you level the weapon.

  2. Special camos: Three weapon-specific challenges that become available at certain Weapon Levels.

  3. Gold: Complete all eight Military camos and three Special challenges, then finish the Gold challenge.

  4. Platinum: Earn Gold on every weapon in the same class, then complete that weapon’s Platinum challenge.

  5. Harmonic Break: Complete Platinum challenges across all 33 launch weapons, then finish that weapon’s Harmonic Break challenge.

  6. Divergence: Complete 33 Harmonic Break challenges to unlock Divergence and open the Mastery Camo challenges.

You don’t need to complete challenges for the eight Military camos. They unlock automatically at set Weapon Levels, with the exact levels depending on the weapon.

Special camos work differently. Each weapon has three unique challenges that unlock as you level it, such as headshots, double kills, longshots or mounted kills. Once you complete a Special camo challenge, that camo can be equipped on your other weapons as well.

The camo grind is shared between Multiplayer and DMZ, but the requirements change depending on the mode. Gold normally requires either 15 eliminations in a single Multiplayer match or 100 enemy eliminations in one DMZ deployment. Launchers are the exception in DMZ, where the current Gold requirement is 50 enemy kills in a single deployment.

Platinum challenge types:

  • Assault Rifles: Headshots

  • SMGs: Kills from behind

  • Shotguns: Hipfire kills

  • LMGs: Kills without dying

  • Marksman Rifles: Kills while prone

  • Sniper Rifles: Kills while prone

  • Pistols: Kills from behind

  • Launchers: Kills without taking damage

  • Melee: Kills without dying

Harmonic Break challenge types:

  • Assault Rifles: Double kills

  • SMGs: Hipfire kills

  • Shotguns: Kills without reloading

  • LMGs: Kills without releasing the trigger

  • Marksman Rifles: One-shot kills

  • Sniper Rifles: One-shot kills

  • Pistols: Hipfire kills

  • Launchers: Kills

  • Melee: Kills from behind

Complete 33 Harmonic Break challenges and you’ll automatically unlock Divergence. That finishes the normal Completionist grind and opens the separate Multiplayer and DMZ Mastery challenges.

Fastest Way to Grind Camos

Work through one weapon class at a time and complete each Special challenge as soon as it becomes available. Switch between Multiplayer and DMZ depending on which version of a challenge is easier rather than trying to do everything in one mode.

A simple way to approach the grind is:

  • Complete Special challenges as they unlock. You’re already earning the eight Military camos automatically, so there’s no reason to wait until max level.

  • Finish Gold before moving to the next weapon. Once every weapon in that class has Gold, you can immediately start their Platinum challenges.

  • Complete one class at a time. This gets you to Platinum sooner and makes your remaining progress easier to track.

  • Use Double Weapon XP while levelling guns. Faster Weapon Levels mean faster Military camo unlocks and earlier access to Special challenges.

  • Change modes when it helps. Multiplayer is usually quicker for challenges requiring smaller numbers of player kills, while DMZ can be better for challenges based around large numbers of enemy kills.

  • Pick maps and modes around the challenge. Small, busy maps are better for hipfire and kills from behind, while longer sightlines help with prone kills, longshots and sniper challenges.

Gold is usually quicker in Multiplayer. Getting 15 eliminations in one match is generally faster than completing the higher DMZ requirement, although DMZ can still be useful if you’re already playing the mode or can work on several PvE-friendly challenges during the same deployment.

Once you reach Platinum and Harmonic Break, choose your maps and modes around the challenge instead of forcing every weapon through the same routine.

If you also want to Weapon Prestige, finish any attachment-dependent Special challenges first. Prestiging keeps the camos you’ve already earned, but resets the weapon to Level 1 and relocks its attachments. Finishing challenges that require a silencer or another specific attachment before the reset can save you from unlocking it again.

Multiplayer Mastery Camos

After unlocking Divergence, complete Mercurial Drift, Polyatomic Reforged and Orion Reforged in order. These challenges aren’t tied to individual weapons, so use whichever loadout gives you the most consistent results.

The three Multiplayer Mastery challenges are:

  • Mercurial Drift: Get 10 kills in a match 250 times.

  • Polyatomic Reforged: Get three kills without taking damage 300 times.

  • Orion Reforged: Get five kills without dying 500 times.

Mercurial Drift is mostly about playing enough matches. Respawn modes work well because reaching 10 kills consistently matters more than putting together huge games.

Polyatomic Reforged needs a more careful approach. Taking damage resets your progress towards the next three kills, so avoid crowded fights where several enemies can shoot you at once. Use a weapon you trust and take fights where you have the advantage.

For Orion Reforged, focus on surviving five kills at a time. Play around cover and don’t keep pushing just because you’re already on a streak. You only need five, so staying alive is more important than chasing the next fight.

Once you finish Orion Reforged, you’ve completed the Multiplayer Mastery camo grind.

DMZ Mastery Camos

After unlocking Divergence, complete Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio in order. Each one requires a different approach, from fighting tougher AI to hunting Lieutenants and keeping a max-level Operator alive.

The three DMZ Mastery challenges are:

  • Chiral: Get 2,500 Tier 3 or higher enemy kills.

  • Ripple Tide: Exfil with two Lieutenant Dog Tags in a single deployment 50 times.

  • Helio: Get 25,000 kills using a Legendary weapon on a max-level Operator.

For Chiral, focus on Tier 3 and higher enemies instead of fighting every AI soldier you see. Tougher enemies are more common in the more dangerous parts of Hajin, so head into higher-threat areas with plenty of armour and ammunition.

For Ripple Tide, plan each deployment around finding two Lieutenants and getting out safely. Lieutenant Hunt Towers can mark the nearest Lieutenant, while purchased Boss Board intel can help you target a specific one before you deploy.

Once you have both Dog Tags, focus on extracting. Picking up a Lieutenant Dog Tag broadcasts your position to other players, so continuing to loot or look for fights only puts a completed run at risk.

For Helio, use an Operator who has reached Onyx III and earned all 18 Trait Points. That’s the maximum Operator level, and you’ll need 25,000 kills while using a Legendary weapon.

Don’t Prestige that Operator while you’re grinding Helio. Operator Prestige removes their normal Traits and resets their progression, so keep one fully levelled Operator available until you’re finished.

If that Operator goes MIA, recover them rather than dismissing them so you keep their Trait progress.
