Merlin Trials are magical puzzles created by the legendary wizard Merlin himself. Found across the world of Hogwarts Legacy, these trials give you the chance to unlock extra gear slots– a must for carrying all your loot and magical items!

To activate a trial, simply place Mallowsweet on a stone altar that’s marked with a swirling pattern. But here’s the twist: each trial has a unique puzzle to solve using your spells.

How to Unlock Merlin Trials

You’ll first unlock Merlin Trials during the main story quest "Trials of Merlin," not long after meeting Natty near Lower Hogsfield. Once you’ve completed this quest, you can dive into any Merlin Trial you find in the wild.

What You Need For Merlin Trials

Essential Items:

  • Mallowsweet (required to activate trials)

    • Buy it from The Magic Neep in Hogsmeade.

    • Find it growing in the wild.

    • Grow it in the Room of Requirement.

Spells You’ll Need:

  • Accio – Pull objects toward you.

  • Confringo/Incendio – Fire spells for lighting torches and burning obstacles.

  • Depulso – Push objects away.

  • Flipendo – Rotate objects or blocks.

  • Lumos – Attract moths to stone cubes.

  • Reparo – Fix broken objects.

  • Wingardium Leviosa – Levitate and precisely move objects.

  • Revelio – Highlight interactive objects in blue, making trials easier to complete.

The 9 Types of Merlin Trials & How to Solve Them

1. Orb Pillars (Smash the Orbs!)

  • Goal: Destroy all glowing orbs on stone pillars.

  • Best Spells: Basic Cast, Confringo (for long-range hits).

2. Standing Stones (Parkour Challenge)

  • Goal: Jump across stone platforms without touching the ground.

  • Best Spells: Use Revelio to highlight the correct path—or just fly over on your broom!

3. Moth Stones (Herding Moths)

  • Goal: Lead glowing moths/fireflies into hollow stone cubes.

  • Best Spell: Lumos (attracts and guides moths).

4. Stone Sphere Puzzle (Rolling the Boulder)

  • Goal: Move a large stone ball into a designated pit.

  • Best Spells: Wingardium Leviosa, Depulso (to push the ball), Incendio (to clear obstacles).

5. Stone Circles and Balls (Pattern Matching)

  • Goal: Move small stone balls into empty circles on the ground.

  • Best Spell: Accio (to pull the balls into position).

6. Green Pedestals (Exploding Rocks)

  • Goal: Destroy all green-streaked stone pedestals.
