How to Get Your Wand in Hogwarts Legacy
Getting your wand is a rite of passage, and it happens early on in your magical adventure.
Here’s how it happens:
After you’ve been Sorted into your Hogwarts House and completed your first two classes, Professor Weasley will send you on a trip to Hogsmeade.
Alongside a companion (Natsai or Sebastian, depending on your choices), you’ll visit several shops (including the legendary Ollivanders Wand Shop) marked on your map.
Inside, you’ll meet Gerbold Ollivander, who’ll walk you through the iconic "wand chooses the wizard" moment. Expect some magical misfires before landing the perfect match (just like in the books and movies!).
Once your wand chooses you, your customisation options unlock. It’s time to put your own magical flair on it!
How to Customise Your Wand In Hogwarts Legacy
While your wand's customisation is purely cosmetic (it doesn’t affect gameplay or spell strength), it’s still one of the most magical moments of self-expression in the game.
Note: These choices are permanent for your playthrough– so choose with care (and a bit of flair of course).
Customisation Options:
Wand Style – Choose from 8 distinct designs (Classic, Spiral, Notched, etc.), each with 3 colour variants.
Wood Type – Select from 38 types, including Acacia, Vine, Elder, and more. (Note: this doesn't alter your wand’s appearance.)
Length – Anywhere from 9.5 to 14.5 inches, in quarter-inch increments.
Flexibility – Pick from 19 flexibility levels, ranging from Brittle to Unyielding.
Core Type – Choose one of three legendary wand cores:
Dragon Heartstring – Produces powerful, fast magic.
Unicorn Hair – Delivers consistent, steady spells.
Phoenix Feather – Versatile and capable of a wide range of magic.
There's no "best" combination; just what suits your character’s personality and vibe!
Wand Handles: The One Customisable Part That Isn’t Permanent
Want to refresh your wand’s look later on? Wand handles let you swap styles on the fly!
What to Know About Wand Handles:
They’re cosmetic only (no gameplay impact).
Your wand starts without a handle.
There are 42 different handles across 14 styles (each with 3 colour variants).
Most handles are found by exploring and opening chests throughout the world.
A handful are quest rewards.
You can switch handles anytime in the Gear menu.
So if your wand’s current look doesn’t “spark joy” anymore, don’t worry, you can always try a new handle!
Can You Change Your Wand Later in Hogwarts Legacy?
Short answer: No, not really.
Once you’ve chosen your wand (style, wood, length, flexibility, core) at Ollivanders, it’s locked in for that save file.
The only way to pick a new wand is to start a new game.
However, wand handles can be swapped freely at any time.
Does Your Wand Choice Matter in Hogwarts Legacy?
While the lore tells us that “the wand chooses the wizard,” in Hogwarts Legacy, your wand’s stats don’t affect your magical abilities.
In gameplay terms:
All wands perform identically. No core is stronger, and no wood type gives bonus spell damage.
So feel free to choose based on personality, style, or even favourite characters.
That said, your wand will be with you from your first duel to your final showdown. So it’s worth crafting something you actually like looking at.

Here’s how:
Link your Harry Potter Fan Club account with your WB Games account before starting the game.
Your chosen wand and House will automatically carry over.
You can accept the pre-selected wand or customise it further during the Ollivanders scene.

How to Create a Wand Like Your Favourite Character
Want to channel your inner Hermione or embrace your dark wizard side? You can use in-game customisation to closely match famous wands from the series.
Try these iconic combos:
Harry Potter – Holly wood, 11", Phoenix Feather core. Try the Classic style in Brown.
Hermione Granger – Vine wood, 10¾", Dragon Heartstring core. Use Soft Spiral style in Light Brown.
Lord Voldemort – Yew wood, 13½", Phoenix Feather core. Go with the Classic style in Grey.
Elder Wand – Elder wood, 14½", Unyielding. Use the Ringed style in Dark Brown for a near match.
