How to Beat Victor Rookwood in Hogwarts Legacy
Step-by-Step Boss Guide to Taking Down the Ashwinder King
Victor Rookwood isn’t just your average dark wizard with a bad attitude. He’s the leader of the Ashwinders and one of the main villains in Hogwarts Legacy. As you probably know (because you’re stuck here in the game), you’ll face off with him in the main quest Wand Mastery, and it’s a very challenging duel. Here’s how to beat Victor Rookwood without breaking a sweat– or your controller.
Before the Battle: Prepare, Prepare, Prepare
Chug Some Wiggenwelds – Stock up on healing potions. You’re going to need them.
Bring the Pain – Equip high-damage spells like Confringo, Diffindo, and Expelliarmus.
Think in Colour – Make sure you have spells of each colour type (yellow, red, purple) ready to deal with Rookwood’s shielded tricks.
Phase One: Deal With Rockwood’s Goons
Before Rookwood even enters the battlefield, he sends waves of Ashwinder thugs to soften you up.
Break their coloured shields using matching spells:
Yellow → Levioso, Glacius
Red → Incendio, Confringo
Purple → Accio, Depulso
Use Ancient Magic Throws (L1 + R1) to hurl crates and barrels their way. It’s stylish and efficient.
Keep your combo meter up to build Ancient Magic for the main event.
Once you clear the last Ashwinder, Victor finally shows his face.
Phase Two: Victor Rookwood Enters the Ring
Now for the main act! Rookwood doesn’t fight fair– he fights flashy.
Rookwood’s Moveset:
Orb Trickery – He ’ll toss out coloured orbs (red, yellow, or purple). These are crucial!
Hit them with the same-colour spell to destroy the orb and stun Rookwood, opening him up for huge damage.
Teleportation Spam – He zips around like a show-off. If he vanishes, get ready to dodge.
Unblockable Blasts – His red curse attacks can’t be blocked. Roll, don’t Protego!
Sneaky Orbs – Occasionally, a smaller orb will float to the side and pester you with ranged attacks. Keep an eye on it and use Protego + Stupefy when prompted.
Your Strategy:
Always be on the move. Rookwood punishes players who stand still.
Focus your attacks right after you destroy an orb or hit him with Ancient Magic. These windows are your best shot.
If you’re low on potions, prioritise dodging over spell slinging.
Don’t be afraid to play it slow and smart. This isn’t a sprint… it’s more like a spellcasting waltz.
Pro Tips for Winning the Duel
Use Ancient Magic right after orb-stuns to maximise damage.
Back away from Rookwood occasionally. You can miss orb prompts if you’re too close.
Don’t waste Ancient Magic on regular enemies. Save it for Victor.
Watch the floor and visual cues closely. If your head glows gold, that’s your Protego cue.

Once Victor hits the floor, you’ll complete the “Wand Mastery” quest and get some juicy story developments. More importantly, you’ve just taken down one of the biggest threats in the game—with style.
