Hogwarts Legacy throws plenty of magical threats your way, but with the right strategies, you’ll be duelling like a pro in no time. This guide covers 10 essential tips and tricks to help you outsmart, outmanouever, and overpower anything the wizarding world throws at you.
1. Master the Art of Defense: Protego & Dodging
A great wizard knows that survival is just as important as spell-slinging. Here’s how to avoid taking damage like a pro:
Protego: Block incoming spells when you see an orange halo above your character.
Perfect Protego: If you time your block just as the outer orange ring touches the inner one, you’ll reflect damage, break enemy shields, and stagger them longer with Stupefy.
Dodge Everything Else: Unblockable attacks (marked by a red halo) must be dodged. Time it right for brief invincibility frames.
Interrupt & Chain Blocks: You can cancel Protego into another Protego or dodge while shielding, allowing for fluid defense against multiple attacks.
Look for Enemy Cues: Pay close attention to visual indicators above your character to block or dodge at the right moment.

2. Exploit Enemy Weaknesses: Knowledge is Power
Every enemy has a weakness– and once you know it, fights get way easier.
Check the Collections Tab: This in-game glossary tells you exactly how to counter each foe.
Trolls: When they throw a boulder, use Ancient Magic Throw (R1) to hurl it back for massive damage. Flipendo their club mid-swing to stagger them.
Dugbogs: When they stick their tongue out, use Levioso, then follow up with Diffindo.
Spiders: Fire spells like Incendio and Confringo deal extra damage. Flipendo stops burrowing spiders instantly.
Ashwinder Executioners: Cast Expelliarmus when they charge fire or lightning– it turns their attack against them!

3. Spellbinding Combos: Chaining Magic for Maximum Effect
Dueling isn’t just about spamming spells… You need to chain them together for the best results! Here are a few of the best combos for you to try out:
Levioso → Descendo: Lift enemies, then slam them down for bonus impact damage.
Accio → Levioso → Confringo: Keep an enemy airborne while racking up spell damage.
Glacius → Diffindo: Freezing enemies doubles the damage of red spells, so Diffindo becomes devastating.

Ancient Magic Throws: Use this Essential spell to hurl objects at enemies to break shields and do damage.
Environmental Kills: Use Depulso to push enemies off ledges or throw explosive barrels for free AoE damage.

Stock up on potions to boost your power and survivability:
Wiggenweld Potion: Heals you. Carry a lot!
Maxima Potion: Increases spell damage for a limited time.
