Dark vs. Light Path: Pros and Cons in Hogwarts Legacy

Dark vs. Light Path: Pros and Cons in Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy lets you explore both the noble and nefarious sides of the wizarding world, but it doesn’t enforce a strict morality system. Whether you embrace the Dark Arts or walk the path of a virtuous wizard, your choices will alter gameplay in subtle ways, but won’t change the overall story. Here’s a breakdown of what it means to go "dark" or stay "light" in Hogwarts Legacy to help you better choose the best direction for you

Can You Be Evil in Hogwarts Legacy?

If you want to dabble in the darker side of magic, here’s just how far the game let you go. You can:

Learn and Use the Unforgivable Curses

The most powerful dark magic in the game comes in the form of the three Unforgivable Curses:

  • Avada Kedavra (Killing Curse): Instantly kills enemies.

  • Crucio (Torture Curse): Deals damage over time and applies the Cursed status.

  • Imperio (Mind Control Curse): Temporarily forces enemies to fight for you and applies the Cursed status.

Gain a Huge Combat Edge with Dark Magic

  • Unforgivable Curses break through any enemy shield colour.

  • The Avada Kedavra Mastery talent lets you wipe out entire groups of cursed enemies with one cast.

  • Cursed enemies take increased damage from all attacks.

Make Morally Grey Choices

  • Demand extra payment from NPCs.

  • Keep rare items instead of returning them.

  • Be rude or dismissive in dialogue.

Look the Part

  • Dress in dark robes, accessorise with ominous gear, and wield sinister wand handles.

Hogwarts Legacy’s Limits of the Dark Path

Even if you embrace the Dark Arts, the game sets some limitations to how “evil” you can really be:

  • There’s no Full Villain Arc: The main story always casts you as the hero.

  • There’s no Reputation System: NPCs may comment on your dark magic, but it doesn’t change how they interact with you.

  • There are no Major Story Changes: Your choices may slightly alter side quest endings, but the overall plot remains the same.

  • There’s no Open-World Mayhem Allowed: You can’t attack random students or NPCs outside of scripted combat.

The Light Path: Playing as a Noble Witch or Wizard

If you prefer to be a more traditional Hogwarts student, you can exercise your noble values and:

Avoid Dark Magic

  • Skip Sebastian Sallow’s questline or refuse to learn Unforgivable Curses.

  • Never use forbidden spells in combat.

Make Virtuous Choices

  • Be kind and selfless in dialogue choices.

  • Return lost items instead of keeping them.

  • Offer help without expecting a reward.

Earn the “Respect” of Certain Companions

  • Natsai Onai and Poppy Sweeting dislike Unforgivable Curses. It has no actual impact on gameplay, but it can feel meaningful (to some).

  • Sebastian Sallow supports dark magic.

  • No matter what, relationships aren’t drastically affected.

Reactions to and Consequences of Dark Magic

Even though there’s no morality system, some NPCs will react to your good/evil choices in surface-level ways:

  • Companions and Professors: Some will scold or comment if you use Unforgivable Curses.

  • Enemies: Some foes react with surprise or outrage when cursed.

However, there are no permanent consequences to your “evil” choices. These reactions don’t impact the storyline. There are no in-game punishments for using dark magic– no detentions, no Azkaban.

Final Verdict: Does Your Path Matter?

Your choices in Hogwarts Legacy let you roleplay as a dark or noble witch or wizard, but they don’t significantly alter the game’s main story. The Dark Path offers powerful combat perks, while the Light Path is more about personal preference and immersion.

So, will you wield the power of Avada Kedavra or rise as a virtuous defender of Hogwarts? The choice is yours!
